Current anti-biofouling products are harmful to the environment

The Problem

Biofouling, the growth of algae and pox on ship hulls, is a major problem for the shipping industry. It increases fuel consumption by up to 40%, transports invasive species to new areas and causes massive damage to native ecosystems. To counteract this, over 100,000 tons of toxic anti-biofouling products are used every year.

The problem? - Around 50% of these products dissolve in seawater and contribute to microplastics and 50,000 tons of toxic substances in the ocean.

Anti-biofouling products not only cause environmental damage, but also increase operating costs for shipping companies due to increased fuel consumption and frequent maintenance.

Its novel environmentally friendly hull coating combines nanostructured particles with a polymer matrix, resulting in a smooth and easy-to-clean surface. This coating is biocide-free and solvent-free and lasts at least two years longer than conventional products.

By reducing friction on the hull, fuel consumption can be significantly lowered, which not only reduces operating costs but also CO2 emissions.
